ORI to Survey Mentors

The Office of Research Integrity (ORI) is seeking comment on a proposed plan to survey mentors at medical schools and universities that receive NIH or NSF funding. According to the Federal Register notice, recent studies have shown that "mentoring is a key factor in promoting the development of responsible researchers. However, little is actually known about the qualities and activities of effective mentors. The proposed project will focus on collecting descriptive information from faculty about their role as advisor and mentor and how faculty members perform these roles in their daily work with Ph.D. candidates." ORI is planning to send out a web-based survey to about 10,000 faculty.

Late Cost Transfer Form
University and Federal policies require prompt transfers of both salary and non-salary costs to sponsored project accounts. Every effort should be made to ensure that salary and non-salary costs are charged to the correct account(s) when they are incurred.

In accordance with our Cost Transfer Policy, the reason for each cost transfer must be properly and clearly explained, with the help of supporting documentation when appropriate, in order to prevent audit disallowances. Effective January 14, 2008, the “Late Cost Transfer Form” will be required in lieu of a memo for each transfer request initiated more than 90 days after the end of the accounting month in which the transaction initially occurred. This form can be found at the following website: http://ora.ra.cwru.edu/ospa/forms/Cost_Transfer_Justification_12-27-07.xls.

If you have any questions or concerns about the use of this form, please contact Diane Domanovics at 368-5930 or diane.domanovics@case.edu or Robin Trail at 368-4516 or rwt2@case.edu.

January Science Cafe Update From Sigma Xi
IMPORTANT NEW INFORMATION: Due to fire code concerns, there will be limiting seating at Science Café Cleveland to approximately 50 people until further notice. So that demand can be met, however, there will be an "early café" and a "late café," with 50 spots at each. The early café will have drinks at 5 pm and discussion starting around 5:30 pm. The late café will have drinks at 7:30 pm and discussion around 8 pm. This will hopely work better for people who want to dine at GLBC; you can either wait until after the early café or do it before the late café.

If you would like to attend January's Science Café Cleveland, you can either:
  1. Reserve a spot in advance by sending an e-mail to science-cafe@case.edu.

Approximately 35 reserved spots will be available. Please send one name for each spot requested (i.e., don't just request three spots; request spots for John Smith, Jane Brown, and Bob Jones); names will be checked off a list at the door. Please also indicate whether you'd like to attend the early or late version. You'll receive a reply as to whether you've made the cut within one week (hopefully earlier).

  2. Show up to get an "on site" spot. The first 15 people who show up who don't have a pre-reserved spot will be admitted, though there might be space for a few more if some of the pre-reserved folks don't show.
January’s Science Café Cleveland will take place on Monday, Jan. 14th at Great Lakes Brewing Company. This month’s topic is: "Leap into Action to Save Declining Amphibians".

Our featured guests will be Mrs. Kathy Krynak (Animal Keeper, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo) and Mr. Tim Krynak (Naturalist, Cleveland Metroparks). We'll also be joined by Dr. Tim Matson, Curator at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

You can get more details of this and other science cafés at our web site: http://www.case.edu/affil/sigmaxi/.

NEXT MONTH'S TOPIC: Genetics of reading and writing featuring Dr. Barbara Lewis (Case Dept. of Pediatrics) and Dr. Lee Thompson (Case Dept. of Psychology).

DOES to Inventory Chemicals of Interest on Campus by January 31, 2008

On November 19, 2007 The Department of Homeland Security issued a final regulation regarding the security of chemicals that could be diverted for illicit use. This regulation requires the University to perform an inventory of the campus for chemicals that Homeland Security lists as Chemicals of Interest (COI). The information collected will be used by Homeland Security to assign the university a Security Tier. The University will then be required to implement security measures for those chemicals of interest identified on campus. The Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety (DOES) has been charged by Homeland Security and the Office of the Provost to collect the required information.

You are required to inventory the chemicals in your laboratory according to the Homeland Security chemicals of interest list and report the results to DOES before January 31, 2008. An Excel spreadsheet listing the chemicals of interest has been assembled for your use to report your results. The instructions and the spread sheet can be found on the following DOES webpage http://case.edu/finadmin/does/DHSLIST/.
