NIH Proposes Rule to Permit Multiple Awards Under Single Application
|
| The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has published a proposed rule that would permit the agency to recognize more than one principal investigator for the purpose of issuing separate awards under one grant application, which could obviate the need for subawards in some circumstances. "In some cases ... it may be desirable to disaggregate a single application to make more than one award," the NIH notice states. "For example, in the case of an application for support of a project that involves more than one principal investigator affiliated with more than one institution, it may be desirable to administer the project with more than one award. In addition, applications that involve subprojects may be disaggregated into separate awards to improve scientific management. The revised regulatory language clarifies options and provides an opportunity to contemplate more than one award that may involve more than one institution in response to a single application. This change will foster interdisciplinary and collaborative research and will improve management flexibility even when components of such collaborative research programs are administered by different NIH awarding components." Comments on the proposed rule are due to NIH by Aug. 24. Link to June 25 Federal Register notice: http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov/2007/pdf/E7-12223.pdf.

AAHRP Announces New Accredited Institutions Including UHCMC and MHMS
|
The Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) announced the accreditation of 16 institutions, representing hospitals, an independent review board, universities, and Veteran Affairs facilities. Among these institutions were University Hospitals Case Medicial Center (UHCMC) and The MetroHealth System (MHMS). The Cleveland Clinic received AAHRPP accreditation a few months ago.
The accreditations bring AAHRP's total accreditations to 68 organizations, representing 261 entities. The newly accredited entities include the University of Cincinnati, the University of Kentucky, the University of Rochester (New York), and the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). "This is a very exciting time for these organizations and for AAHRPP," said AAHRPP Executive Director Marjorie A. Speers, Ph.D. "This is the largest number of accreditations we have awarded at one time and we expect the numbers to continue to grow as we see an ever-expanding list of applicants. Not only is it a significant achievement for these institutions, but accreditation is critical for the public's trust in research." Link: http://www.aahrpp.org/www.aspx?PageID=223.

Ohio Board of Regents Action Fund Provides Matching Funds For Capital Equipment
|
| The Action Fund, which has been in existence for many years, allows Ohio's universities to compete more effectively for federal or other peer-reviewed research support by providing matching funds for university research proposals that include capital equipment or facilities. Action Fund requests can be forwarded to OBR by the university's designated Research Officer throughout the year as opportunities arise. The requests must be made prior to the submission of the external proposal; requests made after the submission are not considered. Since the Action Fund is designed to encourage major projects of significant magnitude, only those projects with total project costs of $250,000 or more are eligible for Action awards. For more information about this fund, please contact Eric Cottington at emc14@case.edu or go to the following link:

2007 Presidential Research Initiative Awards
|
The 2007 Presidential Research Initiative (PRI) awards were announced last week. The purpose of the PRI grant program is to promote an interdisciplinary research environment at Case by seeding new research projects involving investigators preferably from two or more schools or colleges within the university. PRI applications for interdisciplinary research involving two departments within the same school or college are also considered; however, a strong case needs to be made that the proposed project is truly interdisciplinary. It is expected that this research will lead to extramural applications and, eventually, extramural support.
30 applications were received and 12 awards were made. The list of awards can be found at:
