OHRP Names Acting Director
|
The Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP) has announced the appointment of Ivor A. Pritchard as Acting Director, following the retirement of Bernard Schwetz. Schwetz had been OHRP's director since 2003. Pritchard most recently has served as a Senior Policy Advisory under Schwetz.

NIH Adjusts Expiration Dates On Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs)

| NIH has annouced that it will adjust the expiration dates on its funding opportunity announcements (FOAs). This change may result in an abundance of email that is generated to individuals who are subscribed to particular list that receive updates about FOAs. New Federal Grants and Contracts Database
|
The Federal Accountability and Transparency Act (FFAFTA) that became law in 2006 requires the creation of a single, searchable database containing information on all federal grants and contracts by January 1, 2008.
The act requires a public access web site to search funding information for data elements. The search results are to be downloadable. Subgrants and subcontracts must be made available by January 1, 2009.
The database will begin with information on grants and contracts in effect as of October 1, 2006 onward. The specific elements in the database can be found at the following URL:
http://www.grants.gov/assets/FFATAMemo2.pdf.
It should be noted that, at this time, principal investigators' names will not be included. But the project title will be included and institutions should be prepared for increased public scrutiny, at least at first.

An Intensive NIH Grant Preparation Workshop

Interested in competing for the more than $700 million in NIH commercialization funding that will be available in 2007? This is the workshop that will help you complete a successful grant application for those funds. Awards of over $1 million per project can be received.

Infectious Diseases Research Support
|
The Division of Infectious Diseases & HIV Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals Case Medical Center, with funds from STERIS Corporation, will provide seed money to faculty to foster research in emerging and healthcare-associated infections. Investigators in the basic science and clinical departments in the School of Medicine and Hospital System as well as in other basic science departments in the University are eligible. Grants, not to exceed $37,500 direct costs each, will be awarded to investigators who intend to gather preliminary data to be used in seeking future independently funded awards. Basic science applications are encouraged but should have a clear translational component related to the themes of this request for application. Up to four grants will be awarded. At least one of these awards will be targeted directly to STERIS interests. The Case Research Institute will serve as the fiscal entity through which the monies will be distributed and awards administered.
Deadline for applications is November 12, 2007.
