Case Human Research Protections Program (HRPP)
Mission Statement
We are committed to establishing and maintaining programs to protect all persons who participate in our research programs. Full compliance with federal, state and local laws regarding human subject research shall not be the only factor considered when evaluating our programs. Every effort will be made to ensure a person's voluntary decision to participate in research, as s/he will be informed of the potential risks and benefits of participation. We shall respect and honor our community's needs by ensuring that those who receive the benefits of research are the same as those who bear the burden.
IRB System
Our IRB system is comprised of five financially separate institutions:
1) Case Western Reserve University,
2) University Hospitals of Cleveland,
3) The MetroHealth System,
4) Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and
5) Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

For some grant applications you may use one institution's FWA number and a different institution's IRB number.
For example an NIH grant awarded to Case but performed at Metro would use FWA 00004428 and IRB 00000685.
| FWA Expiration Dates |

To determine the current expiration date for Case's FWA, follow these steps:
• Follow this link to the OHRP Database search: http://ohrp.cit.nih.gov/search/asearch.asp#ASUR
• Under "Approved Assurances", choose "Search Domestic Assurances" and click on the hyperlink "by Institution Name"
• In the Search Box, type in Case Western and click "Search"
• The FWA will be displayed. In the far right column, click on the hyperlink "Detail"
• Note the current Expiration Date located in the heading at the top of the page.

was created to coordinate education, training, and auditing programs for the faculty, staff, and students of the five institutions.
