Case Institutional Review Board (Case IRB)
reviews social and behavioral science, nursing, and dental research.
Under federal regulations 45 CFR 46
institutional review boards have the authority to approve, require modifications in, or disapprove all research activities
at an institution.

|
A determination of exemption is made by the Office of Research Compliance (ORC), and not by the investigator(s).
Research may be exempted if the research is minimal risk and fits the criteria listed in 45 CFR 46.101(b). See the Guidebook for local criteria and information.

Five (5) business days after receipt at the Office of Research Compliance (ORC), if no revisions are required.

Expedited Review
|
Research may be processed through expedited
review if the research is of minimal risk and involves procedures
listed in 45 CFR 46.110. See the Guidebook (below) for more
details.

Ten (10) business days after receipt at the ORC, if no revisions are required.

Full Review
|
Research is reviewed by the full Case IRB if it does not fall under one of the above categories, and (usually)
if it involves minors, the cognitively impaired, prisoners, pregnant women, fetuses, or the educationally/economically
disadvantaged. Sensitive research topics may also require full review.

Twenty to thirty (20-30) business days after receipt at the ORC, if no revisions are required.
|
Monthly process: meetings are *usually* held on the first Tuesday of each month during the academic year, unless interrupted by holidays. Summer meeting dates may vary. Deadline is 14 days prior to the meeting (see below for upcoming dates).

Guidance on Child Assent for children ages 8-17
The Case IRB suggests that researchers utilize a written and signed child assent
form for subjects in this age range (in addition to parental permission).
When drafting a written assent form, researchers may find it helpful to
create a simplified version of an adult informed consent document, appropriate
for the reading level of the subjects (see "Example Informed Consent
Document" above).
